As I said, it was to be a tough footballing week, and I wasn’t wrong, unfortunately. Both West Ham and Leyton Orient were beaten this weekend, and the relegation scramble is now taking a desperate turn.

Just twelve minutes into their clash with Watford, West Ham saw Anton Ferdinand commit a ridiculously stupid foul in the box that gave Watford their first penalty of the season, which Henderson was more than happy to turn into a 1 - 0 lead. Lucas Neill went off injured again, Bobby Zamora shot wide a lot and Harewood squandered West Ham’s first penalty of the season to keep the score line depressingly familiar to Hammers fans.

Still five points adrift of Wigan, Curbishly is trying to stay positive, but at this point you can smell the fear around Green St.

As bad as the day turned out for West Ham, it was worse for Leyton Orient. At Bournemouth to defend their spot just above the drop zone, they instead collapsed in spectacular fashion, receiving a 5 - 0 drubbing at the hands of Darren Anderton and company.

Martin Ling fumed:

“In the first 15 games of the season, we were nowhere near good enough, but for the next 15 we’ve been more than good enough to get out of trouble.

“But this was like we were back to our old selves. There’s still a lot of hard work to be done.”

All in all, a bad weekend for football fans around these parts. I’ll be down the pub if you need me…
