Welcome to East London Life. Through this site I will be exploring the part of London known as East London - the boroughs of Barking & Dagenham, Hackney, Havering, Newham, Redbridge, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest.
This definition of “East London” is not official. In fact, the official London Plan includes the City of London, Bexley Greenwich and Lewisham, but doesn’t include Waltham Forest. So, the definition I have chosen for what is East London and what is not may seem arbitrary, but if you live in it, I hope you will find it close to your own definition.
More than mere geography, however, East London is a place in constant transition. Every generation sees a new group of emigrants arrive and begin putting their stamp on this, the most multi-cultural part of London. Every year sees people arriving and people leaving, new construction and new uses for old sites.
As is fitting, I am an immigrant to East London, arriving here from the States, looking, like so many others, for a new start, a new life in the world’s greatest city. I hope you will join me in exploring and documenting the life and times of East London.
