I spend quite a bit of time working on this site. Too much, some people might say, but then again we all have our hobbies don’t we? Over time it has grown closer and closer to what I originally envisioned it would be, and certain bits and pieces of it have become favorites of mine.
I would like to share those with you, in the hopes that maybe you will take a look around and come back to see what I am up to on a day other than Thursday, so I give you – my thirteen favorite parts of my website:
- 101 in 1001: I have set myself 101 tasks to complete in 1001 days (just over 2.75 years). Some are easy, some hard. Some are silly, others serious. Stop by and check up on my progress.
- My book collection: As I read, I chronicle my reactions to and thoughts about the books I have read.
- The movies I’ve seen: I do not fancy myself a cinephile or a connoisseur, merely an obsessive compulsive guy with a lot of time on his hands. Come see my subjective views on cinema.
- Some photographs I’ve taken: Currently in something of an adolescent funk, my photo galleries contain my digital impressions of the places I have been, the things I have seen, and the people I have met.
- My collection of quotations: I collect quotations related to my interests and hobbies, and post a new one every day. I find that good quotes tend to send my mind off on a free-associative journey that can move my thinking in unexpected ways, making them a powerful tool in my creative endeavors.
- Some interesting diversions: As I traverse the internets, many interesting things cross my path, but few of them are in need of my writing about them, so I don’t. I post ‘em just as I found ‘em.
- An Open Letter To Twenty-Somethings: Written from the point of view of an jaded older person speaking frankly to a young idealist, I personally think that it is the funniest thing I have written, but that may only show my poor taste in humor…
- The Satisficer’s Manifesto: in which I explore the difference between striving for the best/most/ultimate in everything and being satisfied with what you have.
- Unnecessary Things: There are an enormous number of devices, ideas and goods sold to us as “labor saving” wonders that will make our lives easier and more fulfilling. Here I argue that the majority of these devices actually cause us stress, debt and other assorted harms, and require further accumulation of devices like them.
- My (small) collection of “How To” articles: Here I share what little I know about how to get things done by showing how I went about doing it. Whether it’s keeping your shoes shiny or overhauling your relationship to your food, if you want to know how I do it, look here.
- Maybe you would like to know a bit more about me: I have a whole section outlining why the heck I spend so much time writing this stuff.
- Anyone who enjoyed my previous Thursday Thirteen might be interested in poking around my glossary for some more entertaining words.
- And if that is not enough, I have 100 Things About Me for you to look at.
Awesome list. You have a great site. Keep up the hard work! Mine’s up, 13 words my 4 year old mispronounces!
Very nice list and site. I know what you mean about spending too much time on your site, I’ll be toiling away and realize half the day is gone.
My 13 are up.
Isn’t this the very point of a good Thursday Thirteen: To catch a glimpse into what a person has going on in his or her life? I really enjoyed this list simply for that reason. What a great introduction to, not only yourself, but your blog as well.
Here’s wishing you luck on your to-do list!
Happy Thursday to you!
Interesting!! I’ve read a few of these pages over the past week while I’ve been poking about, but hadn’t seen some of the others.
Your gallery is acting oddly, though: when I tried to view one particular gallery, I still saw the same overall gallery listing. I wasn’t able to drill down further.
Thanks! You’ve got a cute list…
I seem to have buggered some parts of the gallery in a misguided attempt to “improve” it.
You’d think that after a decade doing this I would learn to use a development server….
That’s a good idea as it helps people navigate around your site and an about me page is important.
One might think that. However, since great big huge companies like Google and Yahoo seem to deploy solutions that haven’t been tested as thoroughly as they should (and…well…just about anything from Microsoft) it isn’t as if we’re swimming in good examples.
I forget where I saw this analogy, but it encapsulates things quite nicely: computers are cars, and Microsoft’s gotten us all accustomed to accepting lurchy Yugos.
Wow, you’re blog is like a computer game!
So much fun stuff!
Happy TT!

Great list. Happy T13
Great list. I see I’m going to have to spend some time here.
That will keep my busy for a while – great site by the way:)
Your blog is a virtual playground! Another reason not to do any housework…
great idea! Happy TT!
I loved the closing lines to the 20-somethings letter.
Thanks for sharing.
I’ll ne back to read more here.
Frances
Jon, you’ve got a great site. I particularly like the 101 in 1001 as well as the diversions page. I’ll be visiting again.
Happy TT.
