Now that the clocks have been set back, darkness falls in London around 5:00pm. When we first arrived in the middle of August the sun didn’t set until after 9:00pm, so the change has been somewhat abrupt.

I do believe that I now understand the English mania for tea, however. Looking forward into six months of Winter, when “daytime” is understood to be six hours a day that is slightly less dark than the rest, the promise of hot bracing drinks and small cakes is definitely comforting.
