With our move to the UK pending, I have been in something of a reflective mood lately (when I am not running around in a sheer panic, that is). Foremost on my mind has been all of the things that I know will be different. Some good, some bad, but mostly just different. Here are thirteen things I will miss once we have moved, in no particular order:
- The NHL: It is going to be almost impossible to see NHL games over there; partially because it is even less followed than in the US and partially because live games would be on around 4am for me…
- Friends & Family: Though I have not been nearly as diligent as I could have about visiting, it will be quite a shock to not be able to just hop in the car and do so whenever I want.
- My Coffee Roaster: We are moving into a small apartment without a garden, so there will be nowhere to house my monstrous coffee roaster/frankengrill contraption, though I am hoping to have access to better coffee in general.
- Pets: Unfortuantely, it is simply not possible for us to take our dogs or cats with us - quarantine is 6 months long, costs more than $1,000 per animal a month and only has a 50% survival rate. Blah!
- The South: I was born in Georgia and have lived in almost every state in the South and have a great affinity for it - it’s culture, weather, food and people. On the other hand, it has already, for the most part, become an outpost of Long Island, so this is more of a capitulation than anything I suppose.
- “Real” Peanut Butter: ’nuff said
- American-sized refrigerators and freezers: I am something of a cooking nut, so European size fridges and freezers will take some getting used to.
- American measurements: Given that pints, tablespoons, etc are all slightly different in the UK, I have the feeling that I will be a little disoriented in the kitchen, but it is an excuse to buy new kitchen gadgets and cookbooks.
- Georgia Peaches: It will be significantly harder to stop on the side of the road and pick a bushel or two of “May Gold”s
- NPR: I have become completely addicted, I admit. I hope the BBC is up to the challenge.
- Being the most knowledgable person I know concerning Cricket and Football…
- Peach Brandy: Ahh, the calvados of the South…
- Our House: It may not be much to anyone else escept a project, but to us it has been home. Though I will be glad to be shot of a mortgage, I will be sad to see it go.
