As a proponent of deliberate living, slowing down, and other types of voluntary simplicity, there are quite a few things that I think are important signposts on the way from an industrial-scale to human-scale society. Here are thirteen things that I am glad to see growing in popularity:

  1. Farmers Markets and Community Supported Agriculture
  2. Microbreweries
  3. “Heirloom” vegetables, and backyard vegetable gardens in general
  4. Artisanal foods; cheeses, breads, etc.
  5. Time-consuming hobbies such as knitting, gardening, woodworking, etc.
  6. Home cooking and regional food identities
  7. Scrapbooking, journaling, blogging and other reflective hobbies
  8. Buddhism
  9. Supper clubs in both the commercial nightclub sense and in the small group Cooking Light sense
  10. Micro businesses, particularly one-(wo)man outfits such as eBay power sellers
  11. Homeschooling and “unschooling”
  12. Community banks and Credit Unions
  13. Telecommuting, job-sharing and other flex-time work arrangements
