Dateline Manchester, TN (This entry was written in a notebook on Friday night and posted on the following Friday, after much R&R)
Saturday dawned hot and windy - by 8 am the dust cloud was thick on the campground. For some inexplicable reason, I was awake very early, and so, in order not to wake the rest of our camp, I went and found the pay showers. For $10.00 I was given a private shower room to get the dust and grime off, at least temporarily. It was so worth it…
Once everyone else woke up, we once again made our way to our favorite Spades shade tree and chilled out until the early afternoon. We attempted to get inside the Bonnaroo Cinema to watch the USA vs. Italy soccer match, but it was already packed and the line waiting for a seat was as large as the crowds for some of the minor bands, so we hung out under a tree near the cinema in the hopes of hearing if the USA side scored.
As the game wore on inside, the crowd outside got bigger and bigger, and every once in a while the “Ohh Ohh” song would break out. When the US tied the game with a goal in the second half, the place just erupted. Everyone chanting and pushing for the tent, trying to get inside. It scared the crap out of the security guys, and they called in the mounted patrols to block the entrance. Football hooligans vs. mounted cops at Bonnaroo? Now I have seen everything!
After the soccer match near-riot, we headed over to hear some of Buddy Guy’s set, which ended up being one of the coolest shows of the festival.
