I get asked this question a lot, actually. You see, in certain segments of the computer world, Open Source ideas have long been associated with the beard-and-sandals never-left-college set. To be honest, it partially deserves that reputation, but the answer to the question is an emphatic Yes!

Take this article for example. The Gartner Group is a major market research firm, so for them to revise their measurement methodology because of Open Source is a big thing.

The Gartner report pegged the total worldwide growth of the application development and project and portfolio management software market at 6.7 percent with total 2005 revenues of more than $7.0 billion. Without including open source in the numbers, the growth rate would have only been 4.4 percent.

I think that we can safely say that, at least in the application development market, quite a lot of people care about Open Source.
