There are so many aspects to a person - so many ways we could answer the “What do you do?” question other than with what we get a paycheck for doing. Here are thirteen of the things I see myself as:

  1. Cook: I prepare with my own hands over 90% of the food that my wife and I eat.
  2. Baker: Not to be confused with cooking, baking is a whole ‘nother set of skills, but I do bake almost all of our breads, as well as our desserts and pastry.
  3. Gardener: Maybe not a world-class gardener, but someone who enjoys mucking around in the yard, planting, watering, propogating, etc…
  4. Coffee Roaster: Quite possibly my oddest hobby, but one of my personal favorites. One cup of my coffee, and you’ll never ever set foot in Starbucks again…
  5. Developer: In addition to Movable Type plugins, I have developed several large-scale web applications and a host of other programs for my own use.
  6. Designer: Closely allied to my role as a developer, I see myself as a designer, both visual and informational. I mean, how else do you describe someone who gets equally excited about onion-skin drop shadows and web ontologies?
  7. Artist: Okay, so it would be generous to call the things that I draw and paint “art”, even “outsider art”, but I dig it, I do it, and I might eventually put some up for all to see.
  8. Photographer: I am working slowly towards being an accomplished photographer, but for now I am definately an amateur.
  9. Philosopher: I believ that I have something to contribute to the greater discourse of man on the great questions of humanity, particularly concerning what the good life is and how to live it.
  10. Poet: I consider myself an accomplished poet, and will be publishing my first book of poetry later this year.
  11. Essayist: You’ve read my blog, right? I love the process of writing essays, and have always done so - even my early journal entries are in ALA Style :)
  12. Card Player: Blackjack, Poker, Spades, Gin, Rummy…you name it, I probably know how to play it - except Bridge. I never got into Bridge.
  13. Agitator: Instigator is one of the terms people use frequently to describe me, and I’m proud of that fact. It is pretty easy to see this whole blog as agitprop against blindly materialistic consumer society.

How lucky for your wife that you cook. Awesome! My hubby can be trusted on the grill, but keep him OUT of MY kitchen, lol. Happy TT!

I find it so odd that so few men cook at home - few enough that women always comment on a man who does cook.

During my time in food service, it was unusual to find women cooking, and I don’t just mean chefs, I mean anywhere in any restaurant. Food service is an almost entirely male industry, so why do so few cook at home?

Great list! For one, I can say why P Daddy doesn’t cook … because I’m so finicky! Although I’m secretly glad he doesn’t bake. That would -so- get me into trouble!

I really like this list. And I’m impressed that you prepare so much of your own food as opposed to eating out.

Well, you see, I am something of a raging food snob, and as such, there are very few restaurants that meet my criteria (only two out of about 900 in my city). So, if I want to eat what I consider excellent food on a regular basis, I have to make it myself. Take a look here for more about this.

I’ll have to start looking for some of your photos, Ms. Photographer. :)
