You may have noticed that the articles and posts here, and just about everywhere else that talks about the “simple life” revolve around three main topics: money, health, and the environment. There is a reason for that.
In most cases, these three things are complementary; something that saves you money is likely to also be good for your health and for the environment. Likewise, something that is good for your health will probably be good for the environment and will save you money. Something that you do for the good of the environment will also (you guessed it) save you money and promote good health.
It is an interesting thought experiment to see how many things in your life fall into this triangle, but it also points out a deeper philosophical point; that the inverse is also true. That, for me, was a huge “Aha!” moment, when all of a sudden, quite a few things I previously didn’t care about, or made light of such as the environmental movement, all made pretty serious sense to me.
Doing something that cost me more money was also damaging to my health (working more to pay for it and stressing about the bills) and damaging to the environment (environmental manufacturing impact). Well crap. Now my little simple living kick is all of a sudden political….
…but I’m not trading my combat boots for sandals
