I would much rather live under the canopy of native tree and take my chances with the occasional limb falling, though if one were to put as much work and time into tree care as the average suburbanite does into lawn care, that would be a moot concern.

Under a tree canopy, a house i subject to far less sunlight during Summer, requiring less cooling, and in Winter, the canopy is bare, allowing for efficient heating by thermal mass. Additionally, not having a lawn reduces your demand for space, not just in the footprint of the lawn, which is likely to be smaller, but in storage space for lawn mowers, seed spreaders, sprayers, and all of the other junk that goes into maintaining turf.
