As I promised earlier, I am posting my financial goals here, so that you folks can help keep me accountable for them. I think of these as pretty modest goals when taken individually, but pretty amazing when you total them up and look at where that puts us. So, we would like to, in order:
- Pay off our automobile loan We can probably do this with our tax return money, which, due to an unfortunate set of circumstances, will be substantial this year.
- Pay off student loans This is a more sizable chunk of change, but if I am calculating right, we still have enough excess junk around the house that once it is all sold, we will have enough to retire this debt.
- Sell our house We live in a completely retarded real estate market, and by selling our house in the next year and moving to somewhere with sane pricing (meaning less than $100/sq. ft.) we could actually realize some profit from the house.
- Buy a dirt-cheap fixer-upper or foreclosure Ideally we would pay less than $50/sq. ft. for a house that was in a walkable city, but not in a fashionable (white) neighborhood that needed a lot of work, but had no structural problems.
After that, things get pretty fuzzy, but we’re comfortable with that right now. We are so close now to being debt-free that we can taste it…really just these three steps left.
