In deciding what work to undertake in life, a man should first endeavor to share his soul, by becoming an artist, poet or musician. If he finds his soul unfit for sharing, then he should choose to share his mind by becoming a teacher, philosopher or writer. If he finds no thoughts in his mind, then he should put his body to use; farming, building houses or producing crafts and useful goods. If his body is too weak for such work, he should then put his money to work, building parks, libraries and museums. If no money is to be had, no work can be done, no thoughts can be transmitted and no emotion or soul can be shared, then a man has no choice but to descend into the purgatory of business in the hopes that one day he will be able to contribue to life through his philanthropy. If then, oh wretched creature, he is a failure in business, that lowest of occupations, he must then become a politician, though it would be better if he had not been born at all.
